Cuba's Cookin has one of the better origin stories in Aruba's dining scene. The owner, Douglas Marcus, is a Canadian who spent three decades falling in love with Cuba - its people, its art, its music, its food. He started going in 1994, fully against his will, dragged along by friends on a cigar business trip. Three nights turned into years. He came back with over a hundred Cuban art canvases, a deep knowledge of Havana, and eventually a restaurant that tried to bottle everything he had found there.
There is also a detail worth knowing if you are reading this on myarubaguide.com: Douglas was the original owner of Aruba Knights, the tourism magazine that eventually became My Aruba Guide. The team has eaten here many times over the years, sitting with Douglas and talking about the magazine, the island, and Cuba. This is not just a restaurant we recommend - it is one we have a real history with.
Cuba's Cookin is at the Renaissance Marketplace on Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard in Oranjestad. The inside walls are lined with Cuban art - paintings, photographs, and pieces collected personally by Douglas over his years in Havana Vieja. There are pictures of Douglas himself among them. The bar is solid, the music cues you in from outside, and the whole effect is a room that feels genuinely transporting without trying too hard.
You can sit inside for a slightly quieter experience or outside under cover, where you are still sheltered but part of the marketplace energy - people walking by, the open air, the evening buzz of Oranjestad.
The tacos are excellent and one of our team's personal favourites after many visits. The menu leans Cuban and Caribbean, with dishes that reward the adventurous eater. Ask the staff what is best that evening - they are happy to guide you.
The mojitos are what Cuba's Cookin is most famous for, and they deserve the reputation. Order one at the bar while you wait for your table - or several, and stay at the bar entirely. Fresh mint, the right lime-to-rum balance, made properly. The best version of this drink you will find on the island.
Everyone. Families, couples, groups of friends, solo diners at the bar, business lunches, after-work drinks. The format is flexible, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the menu works for most tastes. If you want to eat somewhere with genuine personality - not a resort restaurant, not a chain - this is it.
If you are looking for a quiet, romantic dinner for two, the open energy of the Renaissance Marketplace and the social atmosphere of Cuba's Cookin may not be what you had in mind. It is lively and communal - that is its strength, but it is worth knowing in advance.
Come through the back of the Renaissance Marketplace for the free parking - three hours is more than enough for dinner. Ask about live music nights when you arrive or call ahead. The mojitos at the bar are worth lingering over even if your table is ready.
Douglas Marcus, the owner of Cuba's Cookin, was the original owner of Aruba Knights - the magazine that became My Aruba Guide. We have shared many meals at this table over the years, often with Douglas himself, talking about the island, the magazine, and where it all began. There is something satisfying about eating at a restaurant whose owner helped shape the guide you are reading.
Yes - especially if you want somewhere with real character. The food is good, the mojitos are excellent, the art on the walls has a story, and the whole place feels like it was built by someone who genuinely loves what he is doing. Come for dinner, stay for the music if it is playing, and order a mojito the moment you sit down.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cuba Cookin’ was a bit like a Cuban family reunion: some stars of the show, some supporting characters, and plenty of music. The pork was the undisputed headliner. Tender, flavorful, and the kind of dish that makes you briefly consider licking the plate when nobody’s looking. The garlic bread was also a winner, arriving ready to do its job and doing it well. The beans, however, seemed to be taking a more relaxed Caribbean approach to life. They arrived lukewarm and never quite got the memo that they were supposed to be part of a hot meal. The Cabernet Sauvignon was delicious and helped smooth over any culinary plot twists. But the true MVP of the evening was the one-man-band. He was phenomenal and brought so much energy and charm to the restaurant that he elevated the entire experience. The music created an atmosphere that was worth the visit all by itself. Food was good, but not exactly the kind of meal that inspires you to write postcards home. The entertainment, on the other hand, deserves its own encore. Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wine: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Live Music: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+ 🎶🍷🇨🇺
I had a great experience at Cuba’s Cookin’ during my trip to Aruba. The service was excellent from start to finish, and the staff was incredibly friendly — especially Sandra, Adriana, Mariangel, Grace, and ABC (whose name I unfortunately don’t recall). I wasn’t very hungry, so I ordered the ceviche and a coconut mojito, and both were really good. The mojito in particular was refreshing and well balanced. Overall, a welcoming atmosphere, great service, and good food. I’d definitely return!
I was in the area and saw the huge sign, “cuban food” so instantly my mouth was watering. We come in and the service is really chill. The sign read, “Seat yourself”. So we did. Aesthetically this restaurant is very attractive so kudos to the decor. It has bright colors, a stage for musicians, and beautiful paintings. I was impressed. We sat down and receiving water and menus did take a while but after that everything else was quick. The server was very helpful with suggestions and knowledge of the menu. I appreciated her professionalism. Then the food came and blew me away. It was so delicious, well seasoned, and just what I needed. The food prices are on the expensive side but I would still come back here to try something else on the menu. Overall I would recommend. Thank you for a nice welcome meal in Aruba!
All stars to Cuba’s Cooking and the incredible staff who truly put their heart and soul into what they do. We were taken care of by Brenda, who went above and beyond—especially since 2 out of 3 of us have allergies to meat, seafood, eggs, and cheese. Brenda made sure she fully understood our needs and thoughtfully recommended dishes from appetizers to desserts that were not only safe for us but absolutely delicious. She made us feel included and comfortable, without ever making us feel “different.” The food was so amazing that we came back again the very next day! 😀 Highly recommended—beautiful ambience, outstanding service, and a 10/10 experience all around.
The food was ok but didn't have much flavor. Most of it was also quite dry. The service would have been better if the server spoke better English. The atmosphere was very nice with lots of authentic cuban decorations. I didn't check the ladies room, but the men's was disgusting and there were no paper towels to dry your hands. All in all not great.
