Zika in Aruba: What Travelers Should Know

Zika has been rare in Aruba in recent years. A small number of isolated cases were detected in 2024, but there is currently no widespread circulation on the island.

Most infections are mild, and many people experience no symptoms at all.

Common symptoms of Zika

  • Mild fever
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rash
  • Red or irritated eyes

Symptoms usually appear within a few days after a mosquito bite and resolve on their own.

Treatment and care

There is no specific treatment for Zika.
Recommended care:

  • Rest
  • Plenty of fluids
  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen) for fever or pain

Important:
Avoid ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin until Dengue has been ruled out. These medications thin the blood and may increase bleeding risk if Dengue is present.

Zika prevention tips

  • Use mosquito repellent daily
  • Wear light, protective clothing
  • Stay in airconditioned accommodation
  • Avoid standing water
